Deals with Vice-Admiral Lestocks defence over his conduct at the Battle of Toulon in 1744. Richard Lestock was in hopes of commanding the Mediterranean Fleet but Vice-Admiral Thomas Mathews was appointed in his stead and the two men were unfriendly toward each other and their actions precipitated the eventual failure of the blockade of Toulon. Both were court-martialled and after a trial Lestock was acquitted and Mathews eventually dismissed the service.
