"Tho' I have not the pleasure of a personal aquaintance with Doctor Morgan, I can assure you that I should as readily have complied with your request for a copy of my letter ... to Congress respecting the state of the hospital at Princeton, as with that of the [illegible] who has made it in your behalf ... but whose name, from the desire he expressed in his letter to have in immediately burned, I do not think proper to mention.|"... [M]y firm persuasion that the letter in question was unfairly consigned to oblivion by a particular faction in Congress, & that the "bare ipse dixit" of the gentleman whom it was supposd to affect was taken as a sufficient dis proof of any detail of facts, every one of which I could have most substantially supported - would naturally induce me to furnish you with a copy. But unfortunately the book in which it is copied is not at present in my possession - as I am frequently obliged to lighten my baggage by depositing my books & papers not in present use at the house of particular friends (which I think safer against the attempts of the enemy or the Tories ...."|In February and March,1778, Livingston had written Congress regarding the condition and management of continental hospitals at Trenton and Princeton. At the time, Dr. John Morgan was the physician in chief of the hospitals of the American army. Possibly that conrrespondence is the subject of this letter.|Dr. Benjamin Morgan, an original member of the Massachusetts Society of the Cincinnati, was a surgeon's mate during the American Revolution.
