William Congreve, 1st Baronet, served in America in the early part of the revolutionary war before he was appointed superintendent of military machines at the Royal Military Academy at Woolwich in 1778. He drew from his experience serving in America in designing improvements to gun carriages and military maneuvers. His exercise for the light 6-pounder gun was never published but was circulated in manuscript copies (only a handful, including this one, are known to survive).
Illustrated throughout the text with sketch diagrams of the movements of the artillery pieces through the complex exercises.
Title & text within double border.
