Acknowledges receipt of Thomas' letter in answer to his previous request regarding a certificate [of service] for Thomas Watson, but now seeks "some further information respecting James Freeman."|"He [Freeman] is found on the rolls in Rices Company of [Giles] Russells regiment for 6 months. Freeman states ... that he enlisted some time in the year Major Andre was executed for 3 years in Capt [Nehemiah] Rices Company Col Russell's regiment but after the death of Russell he was transfered to Col. [Isaac] Shermans regiment."|Salmon Hubbel swears that he has in his possession the muster roll of Capt Asahel Hodges Company in the 5th Connecticut Regiment commanded by Col Isaac Sherman dated in August 1782 and that their [sic] is in said muster roll a private named James Freeman ...."|The War Department seeks an` explanation "how [Freeman] was transferd from Rices to Hodges Company."|"If it is in your power to help this poor old ind[i]gent fellow creature you may rest assured that you will bestow a great benefit upon him ...."|Col. Russell commanded the 8th Connecticut regiment of the Continental line. He died 28 Oct. 1779, and was succeeded by Sherman.
