Summary
Apparently a copy of an affidavit by Daniel, Thomas, and Freeman Thomas of Ridgefield, Connecticut, testifying to the service in the Revolutionary War, of Daniel Thomas, Sr.|Service began with his enlistment at Ridgesbury in Fairfied County. Next he served as a dragoon under Colonel Shelden and as a Continental soldier in Col. [John] Durkee's regiment "but don't know the length of his service but unerstood it was 3 or more years. (the above sworn to January 2 1845)"|Daniel Thomas, Jr., aged 69, "testifies that from his earliest recollection it has been well understood ... in his father's family lll that he was a soldier of the Revolution and he served from the first year of said war."|Freeman Thomas, another son of Daniel, Sr., aged 53 years "corroborates the statement by his brother Daniel and "adds that his father's discharge and other papers relative to his Revolutionary services was in his possession until a few years before his death, when his house was consumed [and] the papers ... destroyed."|In addition, Thomas Wilson, 87, had also been a member of that company and corroborates Daniel Thomas' service in 1775: Daniel Thomas enlisted in 1775 into Capt. I. Doolittle's Company, Col. Waterbary's Regiment raised for the defense of the northern frontier.|At bottom of p. [1]: Sworn 28th Jan. 1745 bbefore Henry Smith Justice &c.|On p. [2]: "Samuel St. John of Ridgefield aged 82" testifies that Daniel Thomas Sr. was his uncle "and that he was early acquainted with him." St. John's testimony echoes the earlier testimony but cannot supply the names of the officers Daniel served under other than that of Col. Bradly. He also adds that "Daniel Thomas was married to Eunice [Foster] Thomas in 1779." But a note says that he was mistaken about the date, that the marriage took place 2 years earlier: "His memory is probably much impaired, and no wonder, on account of his extreme old age, it is reasonable to expect it to be so."|This evidence may have been offered in support of a pension for Daniel Thomas' widow, Eunice.
