Summary
On verso, originally the address leaf, is Phelps's draft response as well as his not: ans. Sep. 11|"Mr. David Brace of this town, an aged man & infirm & in low circumstances wishes to avail himself of the recent pension act, but is unable to prove his service ... unless by his own oath ...."|"[H]is service was all state service, by inlistment; he believes you may find somethiong in your department which may be useful to him & wishes you to inspect the documents ... for that purpose & inform him by mail as to the result."|Brace's recalled service includes for 7 months in 1776 in a company commanded by Capt. Abiel Pease, stationed at Fort Trumbull, I presume in Colo. Wolcott's Regt.|In 1777, he enlisted into the state service for 7 months commanded by Capt. Abiel Pease; in 17779, he enlisted into the state service for 8 months under Capt. Robinson, I presume Elijah Robinson of Stafford & stationed at Fort Trumbull. In 1781, he enlisted into the state service for 1 year in a company of artillery commanded by Capt. [Shopley?], stationed at Fort Trumbull.|Brace is listed as a pensioner in Tolland Co., Conn. in 1832 -- Record of Connecticut men ... during the war of the Revolution, p. 656.|Digitized image available.
