Summary
"I cannot find by the books of this office that Mr. Sprague ever had any account established or that any depreciation of his pay while in service of the United States was ever allowed by this state."|"[I]f I am correctly informed no officer that left the service voluntarily was deranged as supernumerary at a certain period, I believe in 1777 or 1778 was intitled to depreciation on his pay for former services, one of which cases I presume Mr. Sprague will fall under, as his name is not in the Army Book of the Connecticut line."|"[I]f, however ... it should prove that he was a prisoner at the time that depreciation was made ..., it would give weight to his application whether made to the General Assembly of this state or to Congress.|"Upon conversing with Col. Wyllys respecting Lieut Sprague, the impression on his mind is that he left the service before he was intitled to depreciation.""|"P.S. inclosed [sic] is the two dollar bill sent me as I charge no fees."|One James Sprague of Connecticut served as a sergeant in the Lexington Alarm, as an -- Francis B. Heitman. Historical register of the officers of the Continental Army. Bryce Metcalf lists him as eligible to the Society of the Cincinnati, but Sprague did not join.|One James Sprague, according to Sprague families in America (1913), was born in 1739 in Lebanon, Connecticut and served in the French and Indian War. The account of future service compares with that in F. B. Heitman's Historical record: service in the Lexington Alarm, ensign in the 3d Connecticut, lieutenant in the 20th Continental Infantry in 1776, and as 1st lieutenant in the 3d Connecticut in January 1777, retiring 15 November, 1778.|Digitized image available.
