"That, in consideration of the military service performed by Robert Elliot (a lieutenant for the war) to the United States, in the Virginia Line on Continental Establishment, and in pursuance of an act of the Congress ... intituled [sic] "An act to enable the Officers and Soldiers of the Virginia Line ... to obtain titles to certain lands ...."|The document also cites another act passed on 9 June 1794, amending the first act of 10 August 1790.|In his 1827 pension application, Elliot submitted evidence that he was commissioned as Lieutenant in the Twelfth Virginia regiment commanded by Colo James Wood and continued to serve as Lieutenant in the said 12th regiment until sometime in the latter part of the year 1780, and has no other evidence of his said service, having incautiously given up his commission as Lieutenant to a certain James Taylor to whom he had sold his claim to his bounty lands.--see Library of Virginia.
