Signed: "Given under my hand and seal at arms in the camp near York in the State of Virginia, this thirtieth day of October in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and eight one. Lafayette."
Lafayette testifies to the American military service of Charles de Frey, who obtained the rank of captain in the Continental Army in 1778.
Lafayette writes " ... at which time he joined my family and continued in it until after the Battle of Monmouth, during all this time his Zeal and Intelligence distinguished him as an Officer of Merit ..." & notes Frey's subsequent service in Pulaski's Legion, his imprisonment and exchange, and service under Lafayette's command at Yorktown.
Frey became an original member of the French Society.
