[1], in a different, hand, that of the nephew of Querénét de la Combe: Papiers concernant mon oncle l'ingenieur mort en 1788, chef de brigade dans le corps du génie militaire, apres 38 ans de service ....|Extract in French from George Washington's general orders on the day after the surrender at Yorktown, congratulating the allied forces for "the glorious event of yesterday."|Acknowledges the assistance of "son excellence le Comte de Rochambeau" and thanks "Générales Baron de Viomenil, Chev de Chastellux, M.is de St. Simon et Comte de Viomenil et Brigadier général De Choisy" [ p. 1-2]|Also praises the Gatinois and Deux Ponts regiments "les deux pieces d'artillerie."|Requests that Rochambeau thank "Générale Du Portail et ... Colonel Querenet pour la vigueur et la science qui ont brillé dans la conduite des travaux ...."|Rochambeaux, both Baron and Count Vioménil, Chastellux, Marquis de Saint-Simon, Brigadier General Choisy, du Portail, and Querénét de la Combe were original members of the French Society of the Cincinnati.|For a copy of the text of Washington's orders, reproduced from the collections of the manuscript division of the Library of Congress, see this library's case file. That manuscript identifies the engineer as "Colonel Carney". Also quoted in Fitzpatrick. The Writings of George Washington, 23:245-247. Fitzpatrick inicorrectly identifies Quérénét de la Combe as Col. Ethis de Corny", a commissary in the department of supplies, who was in France at the time of the siege of Yorktown.|The French copy of the orders was owned by Col.
