Summary
"Inclosed you will find a letter from Mr Lefebvre [not present] authorizing you to liberate his servant & requesting you to remit the sum you have recovered to me."|"The disposition of the French Republic towards this country has created a very great gloom amongst our commercial people. Although it may not terminate in hostilities... yet it will give a sanction to their armed vessels to prey upon our commerce, which from the careless character of those who command them, they are too prone to indulge. I sincerely deprecate the consequences."|"Nothing but a systematic plan of reducing this country to the necessity of excluding the British from its ports (which they have accomplished in many ports of Europe) could be the cause of such vindictive measures."|"It is therefore seriously to be wished that they should meet some severe check ..."|I am very apprehensive that Mr Adams will not carry his election."|Page [3] contains a note signed R Gilmor [Jr.], giving background on Mr. Bingham, an "agent of the Congress of the Confederation at Martinique during the war" who was a "partner in my father's commericial house of R G&Co from 1785 till 1799."|Page [4] is address leaf.
