"I send you by this day's mail, an address [not present] I delivered on my second inauguration as mayor, by which you will perceive I have been under great obligation to you from the very important statistical facts, in relation to the [convenience? commerce?) of the lakes & Mississippi River with its tributaries."|Your report, from which I derived them, is one of the most valuable that has been made to Congress during the session."|"It compells one to think, reason, & appreciate the boundless resources & prosperous destinies of the Republic."|Abert headed the Topographic Bureau of the U.S., and was charged with mapping the American West.|Watermark: Jessups; location of chain lines differ from all figures in Gravell. American watermarks, nos. 603-610, though the lines are not clear in his figure 603. The first operated from 1835 in Westfield, Mass.
