Caption title on p. [1]: "In obedience to an order of the worshipfull [sic] court of Loudon County, we the subscribers being first sworn have appraised the estate of Col. George Johnston died in the County aforesaid an inventory of which is as follows ..."|Signed by Thomas Chinn, Joseph Farrow and Richard Cupper; signed and attested by Charles Binns.|An attorney in Loundon County, George Johnston [Jr.] served as a captain and then major in the Virginia Continental Line and fought with Washington at the Battle of Trenton. He was appointed an aide-de-camp to Washington in January 1777 but died in May of that year after a brief illness.|Inventory of his estate appraised at L624.10.0, including five slaves and two indentured servants; about half of the inventory is devoted to his library, including legal works, histories and modern and classical literature.
