Five perspective views of the approaches to New York Harbor taken by J.F.W. Des Barres for the use of British Royal Navy; produced by the aquatint process, the five views portray what an eighteenth-century ship's pilot would see of the shore at various points in sailing into New York Harbor, including showing the lighthouse at Sandy Hook, the skyline of New York City, the openings of the Hudson and East rivers, and parts of Brooklyn and New Jersey on either side.
