He regrets not recalling "the terms in which I expressed my opinion of your inquiry into the constitution of the [C]ongregational churches of Massachusetts & the vindication of their rights."|He does recollect his "vindication of the rights of the United States against the pretensions of Spain, in relation to the navigation of the river Mississippi"|"It was in the presidency of Mr. Adams who was then at Quincy [when] I sent him copies [of his "Vindication] & received his answer, in which, pedantically enough, he pronounced my performance "concinnate and consummate .... It was a satisfaction to me that he was pleased. But a volunteer letter from Mr. Jay, who was a perfect asmaster of the subject, and whose character for eminent discernment and purity had before excited my veneration - the strong approbation of this man went to my heart."|"You know that I have lived "through evil report" as well as "good report["]: publicly, perhaps more of the former than of the latter. But I am not conscious that either has drawn me aside from the straight path of duty."|He also mentions the influence of his father.|Pickering was an orginal member of the Pennsylvania Society of the Cincinnati.
