Summary
In an unidentified hand; cf. nos. 2 and 3, also from Morrill but in different hands.|"I have bin to Fort Schyler [Schuyler] for six weeks. We hat sege [had siege ?] for twenty days til we got a reinforcement and then we trove them for sixty miles as far as [O]swego and tuck all thare bagage consisting of four morters one feld pece and a puntance [abundance] of military stores and a puntance of clothin and other stores ...."|Also asks about John Wilson "and if the selectmen will not alow that [it go?] to Mr. Cousian and he will not bude [put?] him town [down?]for Salisbury when we pas[s] muster. He never asts what town that [he] belongs to but the selectment of [T?]erry Town gives thare mens names and the number of them and so thare [is] no tarnger [i.e. danger?] but that you can git the monney from the town ...."|Morrill describes the siege on Fort Stanwix by St. Leger's troops agains the fort held by Herkimer's militia and the 3rd New York, among other reenforcements.|Item [2] from Valley Forge 5 June, 1778, report his recovery from smallpox.|Item [3] from Verplanks Point, 21 Sept. 1782, mentions efforts at Philipse Manor to effect a peace treaty. It also mentions the French army under "Rochambo" , which "has been passing the Ferry this three days with a large quantity of Artillery Baggage."|Morrill may have been part of the 3rd New York Regiment, who had manned the fort since early April, 1777, but they were reenforced in August by men and supplies sufficient for 6 weeks -- cf. P. A. Boehlert.
