Letter of sympathy relating to Pierce's son Benjamin's death by a railroad accident on Jan. 6, 1853: "In the midst of my own grief for the death of one who was bound to me by the strongest ties of affection, and having had the sympathy of Mrs. Pierce and yourself in paying the last tribute to respect and effection to the remains of my beloved brother, we were almost stunned while the sounds of the tolling bells had scarcely ceased to vibrate by the accouncement of the calamity that had befallen your family."|On verso: To President Pierce / from / Hon.
