Author, brother of Ethan Allen, was one of the "Green Mountain Boys" and Vermont politician; in 1795 he bought arms to supply the Vermont militia, but his ship, Olive Branch, was captured by the British in Nov. 1796; charged with attempting to furnish Irish revolutionaries with arms, he argued he bought arms to protect Vermont's northern frontier; the case was finally settled in 1804.
"The public is informed, that Allen's history of Vermont, published in London, in 1798, will be revised and corrected by the author, and printed ... That near 100 pages will be printed and subjoined to the Olive Branch, when both books will be bound and offered for sale, in different parts of the United States"--p. 24.
