Copy of a letter to General Anthony Wayne from Loyalists in Georgia; for Wayne's response, see:The Remembrancer or impartial repository of public events, Part II, p. 265, available through Google books on line.|"As there is reason to believe it is the intention of the British troops to evacuate the town & garrison of Savannah, we are deputed by different classes of the inhabitants to wait upon you as commander of the Army and also Governor Martin, to know whether such of them as are inclined to remain will be protected in their persons and propertys...."|The addressee is not named in the document; pencilled note on verso: Wanyes hand|Of the authors of the letter, only Irvine is named in Gregory Palmer's Biographical sketches of Loyalists in the American Revolution.|Guy Carleton, on May 23, 1782, had ordered the evacuation of Savannah, an action that resulted in this letter.|Docketed on verso: no. 2 / Letters from the merchants &c / 17th June 1782|Watermark: Lay + Jun.r -- Possibly from the mill of Samuel Lay of Kent, England, but no similar images in Gravell.
