Note
Montresor served as chief engineer for General Braddock and served in America through the French and Indian War, building and strengthening forts and fortifications in New York. He returned to England in 1760, but his son, John Montresor, who had served with him, remained in service in America and would go on to take a leading role as an engineer during the revolutionary war.
Author recommends a corps of nine companies to imporve the organization and management, detailing the breakdown of officers, uniforms, duties and drill: 1st company: "Comprised of the cadets ..."; 2nd compamy: "Company of miners ..."; 3rd company: "Comapny of pontoons ..."; 4th company: "Company of sappers ..."; 5th company: "Company of fasciners & gabioners ..."; 6th company: "Company of carpenters ..."; 7th company: " Company of smiths ..."; 8th company: "Company of masons ..."; 9th company: "Company of pioneers."
"Experience proves that the art of war has been considerably improved within these past few years in every particular, except that --- though not the least important, --- assigned to engineers, considering the great utility of it ..."--Introduction.
Includes watercolor illustrations of uniforms, standards, and weapons.

Bound in full navy morocco with gilt border & floral motif at each corner on covers; gilt royal arms on center of both covers; spine gilt in compartments. Purchased for the Fergusson Collection in honor of Professor Ira D. Gruber.
