"Dear Coll. For so it seems I am to call you now. Grayson has a Reg.t & you are appointed his second. I congratulate you on the occasion, as I also do my country."
In January, 1777, Powell was appointed Lieutenant Colonel of the 16th Virginia regiment, second in command to Col. William Grayson. Later that year, that regiment joined other companies from Virginia, Maryland and Delaware to become Grayson's Additional Continental Regiment.
Griffith, an original member of the Virginia Society of the Cincinnati, was stationed in Philadelphia as a sugeon in the Continental Army at the time of this letter.
Apparently a letter between friends as well as military comrads; Griffith refers to his wife : "What little news there is I have mentioned to Mrs. Griffith." ... who "will I fancy inform you of what you will be pleased to hear."
