"Yesterday I rec.d advice from William Bennet of Edenton that he should receive Gen.l Montgomery's monument, & in about 10 days (from Oct. 3d) ship the same in the brig Rockahock, Francis Marchaulk commander, bound to New-York. I presume there will be time to erect it this fall if no time be lost after its arrival."
"Be so good as to speak to Capt [Daniel?] Niven, & urge dispatch. I think it will be best to consult some of the Livingston family on the subject - the Chancellor [i.e., Robert R. Livingston] if in New York." Robert Livingston's sister was Montgomery's widow.
"I will pay the expense of the work on demand."
William Bennet of Edenton, N.C. was one of the overseers of the project.
Pickering wrote a similar letter, almost verbatim, to Gov. Clinton of New York -- cf. Sally Webster. The Nation's first monument ... 2017, p. 169.
Pickering was an original member of the Society of the Cincinnati, as was Daniel Niven.
