"The bearer, Lieut. Bowen, is the young gentleman whom I took the liberty of mentioning to your lordship at St. James's. I know so well you lordships military feelings, that I am sure you will pity a young officer of great spirit who must [retire?] on a wooden leg and a lieutenantcy of invalids, and will, if it is in your favor, make his retreat a little more comfortable.."

Geoerge Nugent-Temple Grenville was titled 2nd Earl Grenville at the time of this letter and was created Marquess of Buckingham in 1784. -- Valentine, Alan. The British Establishment, 1760-1784.
One Henry Bowen, according to the British Army Lists, was an ensign in the 16th Regiment of Foot in 1779-1781, then rose to lieutenant in the 50th Regiment in 1782. He is, however, stilll listed as a lieutenant in the same regiment in the Army Lists for 1783 and 1784. No other Lieutenat Bowen appears in the lists of that period.
