Covering his naval service during the American revolutionary war, August 1778-June 1782
Contains 189 letters written by or to Admiral William Cornwallis (the brother of General Charles Cornwallis); correspondents include the Admiralty Office, naval officers under his command and captains of other ships, etc.
Letters are on routine naval matters, including stores, victuals, personnel decisions & maintenance vessels, etc.
Also included are accounts of naval battles between the British & French; Admiral Cornwallis commanded the HMS Lion, a 64-gun ship launched from Portsmouth in September 1777. On July 24, 1779, Cornwallis wrote a letter to Sir Peter Parker describing the Battle of Grenada, during which the HMS Lion suffered heavy losses. Cornwallis returned to America on the HMS Canada in 1781, arriving British occupied New York right at the time of the Yorktown campaign.
In a secretarial hand.
Bound in reverse calf; spine in 6 compartments with 5 raised bands; panelled in blind on covers; marbled endpapers.
