First published in 1778 under title: "Battle of Brandywine in which the rebels were defeated September the 11th. 1777, by the army under the command of General Sr. Willm. Howe."; later appeared in numerous editions.
This is later state or 2nd state with major revisions & additions; change of the word "Rebels" in the original state of the map to "Americans" in this post-war edition in the title and other places within the text; central text about the movement of a column under the command of Lord Cornwallis has been removed and replaced (in a different position on the map) by a description of action under the command of General Howe with the troop positions altered to reflect the new text; landscape has been altered with a correction and extension of path of the Brandywine Creek and a great increase in the amount of forested land indicated.
"Note: The operations of the column under the command of His Excellency Lt. Genl. Knyphausen are engraved from the plan drawn on the spot by S.W. Werner, Lt. of the Hessian artillery."
Incudes "References to the column under the command of Lt. Genl. Earl Cornwallis" and "References to the column under the command of His Excellency Lieutt. Genl. Knyphausen."
Library copy: possibly an unrecorded later edition; LC owns "engraver's proof" copy for this 1784 map, which is a hybrid printed and manuscript document that reflects most of the changes found on this printed version.
Scale ca. 1:15,300.
Digitized image available.
