Ms. journal regarding more than 30 years of military service, particularly during the American revolutionary war; Cadignan's participation at age 16 in the French expedition to Louisbourg in Canada; extensive coverage of his service with the Agenois regiment in Saint-Domingue, beginning in 1777; report of the naval battle in Chesapeake Bay, 1781; a day-by-day account of the siege and British surrender at Yorktown, 1781.
Bound in vellum over paper boards with string ties.
Ms. inscription on cover: Ih (?) Duffau de Lagarde.
With addtional ms. (in envelope): Order of Saint-Louis for Louis Dupleix de Cadignan signed by Louis XVIII, 1814; succession shares among Louis Dupleix's widow relatives, 1829; his testament, 1830; list of frigates and king's ships; documentation of the later ownership of the journals (including an offer by the owner in the 1930s to sell them to William Randolph Hearst).
