Johnston, the author of several books about the Washingtons and Mount Vernon writes to Lawrence Washington, who was employed at the Library of Congress, seeking information about the sword given to Washington by Frederick the Great.
She cites a recent newspaper article in which the historian Moncure Conway cast doubt on its history. She is preparing a paper on the five swords Washington left to his nephews in his will. She writes: "It is just the time for the embers to be brushed away from the facts, lest in twenty years from now, twenty "well authenticated" blades be thrust at us ..."
