"I am directed by the President of the United Sates to request ... an exact list to be made out agreably to the form herein enclosed [not present] ... and transmitted immediately to this office, of all the military invalids to whom pensions have been granted and paid by the state of New Hampshire ..."
"The list ... is indispensibly necessary in order to make an arrangement for the payment of the invalids in March next ...."
Also requests a return be made "of the officers widows or orphans (if any) who have received from the state of New Hampshire the seven years half pay stipulated by the resolves of Congress of the 24th of August 1780."
Both Knox and Sullivan were original members of the Society of the Cincinnati: Knox, of Massachusetts; Sullivan, of New Hampshire.
