A Samuel Hazard, probably this one was a lieutenant in Col. Elisha Sheldon's Light Dragoons from Jan. 31, 1777 until he resigned on Dec. 25, 1777. -- Record of Connecticut men of the military and naval service during the war of the Revolution 1775-1783, p. 272.
I ... am sorry to differ with you ... respecting the right which an officer has to retire from service whenever he pleases .... Incapacity in this respect can alone warrant a desire to resign especially at this important crisis of American affairs."
Laurens asks for a "certificate respecting your state of health ... either from the surgeon of the regiment ... or from the Col...."
