Van Bergen was a merchant, ship captain and militia officer based in Albany, New York.
Kept between Dec. 14, 1756-Oct 13, 1784, mostly in Albany with some receipts in New York City when Van Bergen had business in the city.
Contains signed receipts for loads of wood, boards, plank, loaf sugar, rum, Madeira, and ship dockage.
Also includes one 1766 receipt for forty pounds "for a Negro boy" sold to Abraham Dellement; various accounts are signed by James Abeel, deputy quartermaster general of the Continental Army; Nicholas Quackenbush, quartermaster; Jacob J. Cuyler, silversmith and militia officer; and Capt. Baranbus Swartwout of the Second New York Regiment.
