"Medicine journal belonging to the ship Deane, Saml. Nicholson Esquire Commander. Boston Novbr. 1777, P. Saint Medard": p. [1].
Tracks medical treatments aboard at Continental navy vessels by a succession of naval surgeons during the revolutionary war.
Lists name of individual sailors and officer receiving treatments, lists of medicines on board the ships. Entries are made in Latin, English and French; documents an outbreak of smallpox on board ship in 1778.
In another hand at back: "Sick journal for the Continental frigate Deane," June 17-July 30, 1779 (apparently the Deane's second cruise): lists the crew members under the surgeon's care each day, their disorder, symptoms, medicine prescribed, etc.
Then the journal passed on to Pierre St. Medard (a young surgeon's mate from France, who rose to the rank of chief surgeon of the Deane): "Sick journal for the Continental frigate Deane, Samuel Nickolson esquir, commander," Nov. 20-Feb. 10, 1780 (he copied over the previous surgeon's title & followed his format, but kept his log in French).
St. Medard's other entries include: "Sick journal for de Deane," Aug. 18, 1780-Jan. 8, 1781; inventories of medicine aboard the Deane, Feb. 1780-Apr. 1782; post war memoranda dated through 1788.
Ms. label pasted on final page: "Medicine journal of the Continental frigate Deane, Saml. Nicholson Esq. Commander ..."
For St. Medard's service on the Deane during the revolutionary war, see Chap. 2. Prologue in the Continental Navy, p. 15-29 in "Naval surgeon" (call no. 926.1 S145es 1998)
