Enlarged, re-engraving by Bowles & Carver of Carington Bowles' mezzotint after Collet's John Paul Jones.
Jones is shown stopping one of his men from striking the American flag and surrendering to the British during the naval engagement between the HMS Serapis and his fighting ship Bonhomme Richard; on the deck of a ship in action, John Paul Jones fires his pistol point blank at a sailor who stands under the American flag and reaches up for a rope. Two wounded sailors lie on the deck, while four others watch. Jones has one foot on a man lying on deck as he strides forward to shoot, with several other pistols visible in his belt and a sword under his left arm.
