Writing on the advice of his commander Henry Knox Thatcher (grandson of Gen. Henry Knox), Lieutenant Caldwell writes to the president of the Massachusetts Society of the Cincinnati about his eligibility to membership: "in regard to the possibility of my becoming a member of the society. My great grandfather, Charles Caldwell of Hartford Conn was a staff officer in the Connecticut division of troops during the early part of the revolutionary war, he was a commissary and pay master ..."; but evidently his ancestor did not have the requisite combination of rank and length of service to qualify as an eligible line to represented, and Lieutenant Caldwell was not admitted to membership.
