Note
Pickering writes that "Mr. McIntosh who is going with his father, the General, to Fort Pitt, he wishes to see Baron Steuben's instructions, & make such extracts as she shall judge most necessary. You took the instructions with you in the morning."
Steuben did not formally begin writing the official "Regulation for the order and discipline of the troops of the United States" until the winter of that year and his work known as the "Blue Book" did not appear in print until the fall of 1779. This letter suggests that a version of his reforms of the army drill instituted at Valley Forge were already in circulation in manuscript form by the summer of 1778.
