Note
Baron von Steuben writes in French to Morris, who was assistant to the superintendent of finance, that " ... autant que je respecte le beau sexe ...," he states that he cannot maintain the cost of providing for the "Camp Ladies" [written in English] housed with the regiments in New Jersey. He also mentions the promotion of "General Knocks [sic]."
