Note
One of two known manuscript copies of an account of the life of Col. David Mason (1726-1794) written by his daughter Susan Mason Smith for "My dear Nephews and Nieces" in 1824.
This copy was made in the late 19th century for the Willard family, descendants of David Mason, and it includes genealogical information about the family.
David Mason served in the French and Indian War and joined the patriot cause in Massachusetts early on. He was appointed a lieutenant colonel in the Continental Army and established the first American military arsenal, at Springfield, Mass. Before the war, the memoir notes, Mason conducted scientific experiments with electricity and visited Benjamin Franklin in Philadelphia to discuss his findings.
