"The bearer Jonathan Chase ... late a searg.t in the 3rd New Hampshire Reg.t had a furlough some time in Novem.r 1777 at Fishkill for I beleave[sic] forty or fifty days.... I gave him leave to stay in this state till May on condition that he inlisted a certain number of men, which he did, but did not then join the Reg.t but remaind at home until the spring of 1779. I then hired a man to take his place ...."
