Note
Robert Ryrie, a member of the Royal Fuziliers, was taken prisoner by the Americans at the battle of Cowpens in South Carolina, and was held in jail in Philadelphia.
While confined Ryrie found employment making "Horse netts" (which were composed of loose hanging threads that, when the horse was in motion, would act to brush away flies) with John Chaloner, a Phiadelphia merchant. In this letter, Ryrie is seeking similar work again from a local merchant, "As necessity urges me to write I hope that you will forgive my bouldness ..."
