Orderly book kept by Capt. John Schenck's Company of the Second Regiment of New York Minute Men commanded by Col. Jacobus Swartwout. New York City and Long Island, February 18 – April 10, 1776.
Contains regimental orders and general orders for all the troops in New York as the Americans prepared to defend the city. The orders relate to work details, record keeping (including the keeping of orderly books), artillery, weaponry, courts-martial, drills, prisoners, codes of conduct, etc. The text mentions employing the services of black civilians, slave and free, to assist in the construction of defensive earthworks.
With: [4] p. of accounts for Colonel Freer's militia regiment dated July through December 1776 at end.
