John Anderson, a professor at Glasgow College, invented a device to reduce recoil in artillery guns & tried to promote to the British military establishment. When they rejected his ideas he sent George Washington copies of his published works on the subject in English and in French.
These letters to Washington's secretary Tobias Lear follow up on the subject – among other questions he asks whether a light-gun represented in a wax statute of the French general Dumourier in London (where Lear is visiting) "resembles one of which you saw a model among my Apparatus." Anderson also asks Lear to see if he can learn the identity of the author of a new Dictionary of the Art of War being published in London.
Glasgow postmarks & partial red wax seals remain on [2] & [3] letters.
