This recruiting poster was created for New York City's Committee on National Defense, following the United States' entry into World War I. The artist, Charles Montgomery Flagg, played a major role in the design and planning of a great parade down Fifth Avenue held on April 19, the anniversary of the Battles of Lexington and Concord. The festivities began at midnight with a reenactment of Paul Revere's ride by a young woman, Jean Earle Mohle, dressed as Paul Revere carrying lantern and American flag, rode through the streets "summoning the men of America to respond to their country's call." Flagg's quickly made lithographic poster captures the moment.
Mounted on sheet backed with linen.
