Item [1]: Gentlemen - please to deliver the bearer Shubal Johnson on his order all the ballance found due to me for my service done in the 4th Conn.t Regt. from the time of my inlisting up to the 1st day of January 1782 . [I]n complience you will much oblige your Humbl. Servt ... Primus Freeman his mark.
Both Freeman and Johnson were privates in the 4th Connecticut Regiment in 1781. -- Record of Connecticut Men in the Revolution, p. 339.
Item [2]: Attest - Eben.r Gray [to] Committee P. Table Hartford ... This may certifie that the above named Primus Freeman served as soldier in the 4th Conn.t Regt. of the Continental Army before January 1782 and still continues in said reg.t .... [signed] Eben. Gray Lt Col. 4th Conn.t Reg.t
On verso: Gentelemen Please to deliver the within contents of sd order to Lieut John Sherman P. Master of the 4th Conn. Reg.t, Sept. 11th 1782 Shubel [sic] Johnson Committee P. Table Hartford
According to the bookseller, Freeman was a black private in the 4th Connecticut Regiment. -- see case file

John Sherman was an original member of the Connecticut Society of the Cincinnati.
