John Parke, who was an officer in the Pennsylvania line during the revolutionary war, was responsible for translations the works of several classical authors and original poems, many on liberty and other subjects relevant to the American Revolution. Some of the translations are in fact paraphrases, adapted to the circumstances of American history (he substitutes the names of revolutionary war heroes in the texts, or addresses the odes to individual officers). Also included are works of contemporary authors and his own play, "Virginia: a pastoral drama on the birth-day of an illustrious personage," evoking Washington at Mount Vernon.
