Note
"On my arrival in New York I found [Beckwith] Aid de Camp [sic] to the general commanding the Hessian troops [i.e. Knyphausen], and employed in the line of secret intelligence, in which ... he had acquitted himself with much credit and discretion, and otherwise distinguished himself as a gallant and able officer.'
His ... confidential connexion with many of the friends of the British government in the United States pointed him out as a very proper person to obtain information of the state of that country. I therefore sent him to New York in the beginining of February 1787, and in the beginning of August last; and it is through him that I obtained the communications made to your lordship in my letters no. 15 & 82. He will be able ... to give you more minute information respecting the condition of that country, and the dispositions of its inhabitants, than can well be committed to writing."
At upper left corner, p. [1]: Private
For further details about Beckwith, see: Julian Boyd. Number 7, pp. 3-13, especially note 26 which refers to this letter as "not found."
Also refers to his previous request regarding an "ensigney in any of the regiments of guards for my eldest son Guy."
Dochester was governor of Quebec at this time.
Watermark: C Patch and Britannia; no date -- Gravell. Foreign watermarks, English papermaker no. 90 (figures 555 and 556)
