Note
Docketed on verso: John Pierce ... / 1783 / July 22d
"Application has several times been made to me by three officers late of General Hazens regiment for their pay equal to the Army at large for the present year."
These officers (Lieut.s [Francis Gil[man?], [Alexander] Ferriol [sic] and [Pierre Amable] Boileau) were said by Gen.l Hazen to be transfered to the Corps of Invalids, but [Col.?] Nicola informs me he has never received any [missing text] on the subject and cannot acknowledge them...."
"It is therefore a doubt with me whether they are considered in the service, but being at such a distance from their own country, and deprived of the means of supporting themselves and families they appear really to be objects of the attention of the public."
Pierce was Paymaster General of the Army, and Richard Peters was acting Secretary of War.
Hazen's Regiment was also known as the 2nd Canadian Regiment; all three mentioned officers, according to Heitman's Historical register of officers of the Continental Army, retired in 1782.
Moses Hazen, Lewis Nicola, and Pierre Amabel Bioleau were original members of the Society of the Cincinnati.
Torn and reinforced at right margin, affecting some text
