Note
Anderson had been selected to act as Surveyor General to divide lands reserved by the state of Virginia for Continental troops, and Steuben had hired him to survey and pay "the chain man for surveying 7,000 acres of land in 2 surveys" 22 pounds, 3 shillings and 3 pence and "John O'Bannon for locating the same" for 84 pounds.
Apparently inasmuch as Steuben had died in November, 1784, Hopkins issued the receipt in his stead.
John O'Bannon is apparently included in the receipt for a total of 106 pounds, 3 shillings and 3 pence.

Steuben was an original member of the New York State Society of the Cincinnati; Anderson, of the Virginia Society.
