Note
One Daniel Gantley of Athens, N.Y. is the presumed author of this letter. He married Maria, a daughter of Proper Hosmer -- see American Homes and Gardens (June, 1906), pp. 396-398.
A response to Morse's letter to the widow of Proper Hosmer, who, Gantley reports, had died on Sunday morning, Dec. 31st at 7 o'clock in the morning his age was 93 years and 5 mos. A summary of the military service of Prosper Hosmer, whom the writer knew personally: If I had tho't an application would be made for the history of the old gentleman during his service in the Revolutionary War I could have got enough from him to fill a volume, but having no such idea, what he has told me for the last 30 years I can give very few particulars." [p. [3]]
"In the month of May 1777 he joined the army under Colonel Samuel B.] Webb."
From another source names those who "joined the army with him, including himself - William Hooker, aged 20; Jared Buner 19; Prosper Hosmer 19: Sherman P. Goodrich 18; Timothy Olmstead 18; Stephen Moulton 17; Ep__ Jones, 14 (this last name is so blur'd that I cannot make it out to my satisfaction I mean the Christian name - It looks like this Epaprous - You must make the most of it. He has often told me of his having stood very near Major Andre when he was hung - that he was a very handsome young man."
"He has often spoke of his sufferings in New Jersey - he said many nights during the winter he laid down with nothing but his blanket on (in the snow).
"[H]e was a Christian - a Presbyterian - a member of the Rev.d Mr. Darling's church at Hudson; Columbia County New York - he lived in the city of Hudson for 60 years ... Enclosed I send you his signature. (attached to p. [1])
Hosner and the other men listed served in the Connecticut Line -- see The Record of Connecticut men of the military and naval service during the war of the Revolution, 1775-1783.
"In December 1777 General Washington attacked the 55th & 40th British Regiments at Princeton and took about 300 prisoners, among them was a man by the name of Solomon Ballantin a complete master of musick .... He told us after he was taken he went into the church and playd on the organ. Gen.l Washington & COl. Webb were both present."
