As President of the Rhode Island Society of the Cincinnati, declines membership for himself and the Society in the Committee on Patriotic Societies of the proposed National Arbitration and Peace Congress.
"[T]he Society of the Cincinnati cannot be represented in your proposed enterprize, nor have I consented to act as member of any so called Committee on Patriotic Societies. The use of my name or as Secretary General [of the] Society of the Cincinnati is unauthorized and I must request that it be omitted."
"I am aware that Mr. Carnegie, who is not an American, defrays the excuses, and it is apparent that there is some ulterior object ...."
