Taylor writes on the state of the recently signed Declaration of Independence: "Our state [Pennsylvania] hath seem'd in a very fluctuating condition, by the different opinions of the people concerning independence, but it's took place and our bill of rights is declared. The old obstacle of religion is now put upon an equal footing… Now as to our military affairs at New York, with God's blessing we should be able to send to Britain a very good account of our firmness and resolution ... "
