The privateer South Carolina was built in France and chartered for American service in 1780; this letter was written by a lieutenant of the marines on board, the day before the capture.
The ship was blockaded in the Delaware River, she and her crew would surrender following a long chase the next day. Hopefully, Henderson writes that "we now have the pleasing expectation of seeing the ocean before eight & forty hours at farthest where I hope we shall do something more to advantage than can be expected in land service ..." He also writes of his preoccupations about private land transactions in Virginia and "Cain-Tuck" although he feels his first allegiance is to his men on the ship.
